Can this garden be saved?

Kathy McF

Two years ago on April 1st, I took my solo law practice into “senior status” and set off on a journey to become an artist and horticulturalist. It took another three months to actually exit my biggest clients. Not until this month will I have finally moved out of the firm’s storage rooms. And I am applying for June graduation at the New York Botanical Gardens, hopefully receiving certification as a Gardener and in Sustainable Garden Design. As my mother would say, I am putting “X’s in the boxes” and changing myself along the way.

With change came chaos. My office is waist high in boxes. You can’t find anything on my kitchen shelves. I gained 20 pounds. My hair is unruly. While reading texts and examining plantings at the Garden, I let my own gardens go fallow.

The new me wants to transform my space; to turn my garden into art in the hands of a person who is a gardener, not hires one. To answer the question, certificate or no, am I a gardener?

Not today. Today is still about closing the last few doors.

But Sunday is Easter. And my calendar is clear. Sunday I will start.
